Mount Prospect Geography

Mount Prospect is located at 42°3′56″N 87°56′10″W (42.065427, -87.936217).

According to the 2010 census, Mount Prospect has a total area of 10.374 square miles (26.87 km2), of which 10.34 square miles (26.78 km2) (or 99.67%) is land and 0.034 square miles (0.09 km2) (or 0.33%) is water.

Mount Prospect Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 54,167 people, 21,836 housing units, and 14,544 families residing in the city. The population density was 5,310.5 people per square mile (2,050.4/km2) and the housing unit density was 2,140.8 per square mile (826.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 77% White, 11.7% Asian, 2.4% Black, 0.4% Native American, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 6.5% from other races, and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.5% of the population.

Out of the 21,836 housing units, 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.15.

Sycamore Trails Park

Adjacent to the Aquatic Center, this 74-acre park provides visitors a secluded setting in which to enjoy the beauty of nature.

River Trails Park District

River Trails Park District was established in August 1965. River Trails name is not defined by a city or town but by the communities, surroundings and the people who created the agency. The first years of the River Trails Park District consisted of programs such as ice skating, arts & crafts, square dancing, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, folk guitar and Halloween themed activities. The programs took place at the schools and parks in School Districts 26 & 21 and Grace Lutheran Church. The Park District employees were working out of a trailer that was located at 1400 E. Kensington Road. The Park Board knew the opportunities ahead and what was needed to serve their community. On Saturday, September 24, 1966 a vote was needed to be cast. It was a success and the master plan was approved with a swimming pool, bathhouse, office, maintenance garage, four local parks and bonds to develop facilities.

Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Spanish: Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) is a Roman Catholic church, basilica, and National shrine of Mexico which houses the cloak containing the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The 1709 shrine was built in the North of Mexico City near the hill of Tepeyac, where the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. The basilica structure which now contains Diego's cloak was completed in 1974.
