Highwood is located in southeastern Lake County at 42°12′19″N 87°48′44″W,[6] on a ridge 100 feet (30 m) above the elevation of Lake Michigan.

At the 2000 census there were 4,143 people in 1,555 households, including 933 families, in the city. The population density was 6,552.1 people per square mile (2,539.1/km2). There were 1,604 housing units at an average density of 2,536.7 per square mile (983.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 43.14% White, 2.15% African American, 0.58% Native American, 2.12% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 17.19% from other races, and 4.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 38.23%.

Of the 1,555 households 29.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% were non-families. 34.1% of households were one person and 13.0% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.31.

The age distribution was 23.3% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 16.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% 65 or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.0 males.

"Danny Cunniff Park "

Formerly known as Centennial Park, Danny Cunniff Park was renamed, remodeled and dedicated in 1999 after the Park District of Highland Park, Illinois received the largest private donation ever from the family of Danny Cunniff. During Danny's brief but valiant battle with acute myeloid leukemia, which he ultimately succumbed to 37 days after his diagnosis, his parents, Tim Cunniff and Jill Cunniff were deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support they received from the community of Highland Park. Through the generosity of the Timothy Cunniff family, and a matching State grant, a renovation project was undertaken in 1999 to improve the Park's two existing soccer fields and add two new fields to the complex. In 2002, the park was named the Sports Turf Managers Association Soccer Field of the Year. The park is also home to Centennial Ice Arena.

"Prairie Wolf Forest Preserve "

The Prairie Wolf Slough, officially known as Prairie Wolf Forest Preserve, is a forest preserve in Deerfield, Illinois just north of Deerfield High School. The name refers to the Native American name of early Deerfield and Jefferson Park pioneer John Kinzie Clark which was nonimoa, or prairie wolf in English. The preserve is 431 acres and contains 2 miles of trails. Since 1994, the slough has been routinely burned to allow for more native plants and animals to inhabit it and to prevent overgrowth. The land was purchased by the government in the 1970s and today is used by the nearby high school and surrounding corporate offices as a place to learn, play, exercise, and enjoy.
